Valve Job and Cylinder Head Work

For valve jobs, concentricity is important. It refers to the trueness of the seat that results in the precise meeting of the valve and the seat. Every time the valve meets the seat, the heat is dissipated into the seat allowing the valve to cool to a point. If the concentricity of the seat is not true, the valve will not meet the seat correctly, causing power loss and overheating. This eventually weakens the valve, leading to premature motor damage.
In today’s world of high-RPM motors, you need the right equipment to get the job done correctly. While most shops will install a new valve or cut the seats with old-style hand tools, we use a SERDI seat and guide machine, one of the best pieces of equipment on the market.

Replacement of Different Types of Valves

Ricks Motorcycle Machine Shop replaces various valves, including stainless steel, titanium, and steel. We also have the correct valve springs for each material. Additionally, we offer an array of valve seats, beryllium seats, and Pro-1 Racing non-beryllium copper seats. These seats dissipate heat seven times faster than stock and are not prone to chipping or cracking. Because they are made with copper, they give the valve a softer cushion, resulting in less wear and a better seal.

Cylinder Boring

As we ride our motorcycles, the piston, rings, and cylinders wear out. Eventually, we lose the power and performance we once had. Ricks Motorcycle Machine Shop can help you regain them. We have over 40 years of experience doing motorcycle repair work.

What We Do

Ricks Motorcycle Machine Shop bores the cylinder and does a nice chamfer on all the ports, top and bottom. Then, we use a Sunnen hone to size the cylinder to the piston using a 320-grit finishing hone on the exhaust port of a 2-stroke with a bridge type. We also relieve the bridge to prevent seizing using Wiseco pistons, which are forged and work well in all applications.
Our shop also offers cast pistons, similar to what dealers use. But, while they are passable, they wear and become loose, especially in 2-stroke motors. They tend to crack and break, causing motor damage.
To ensure the quality of our bore jobs and top end installation, we give you an instruction sheet on the top end installation and break-in procedure.

Cylinder Resleeving

Ricks Motorcycle Machine Shop has over 40 years of experience in cylinder resleeving. We bore the cylinder to an interference fit, heat it, and drop in a new sleeve carefully to align the ports on the cylinder housing with the ports on the sleeve. Then, we quickly put the cylinder in the jig and apply pressure while it cools to prevent the sleeve from trying to rise out of the liner.
After the cylinder cools down, we match the ports and bore the new sleeve to the new piston. We then surface the head and size the piston to the new sleeve using our Sunnen 320-grit finishing hone. We also relieve the bridge in the exhaust port if it applies to the motorcycle model on which we are working. For your reference, we will give you an instruction sheet on how to put this together and break it in.
